Dan's halloween pics, and thoughts from Jon

Dan and I. Here we've cleverly swapped glasses.

First I'd like to say that from the day I moved to LA 16 months ago, Dan was one of my favorite people. He was the first person here I got to know...he started off by giving me a 2 hour lecture about gopher farming in Iowa (and we compared and contrasted how gopher farming differs in Texas) and the rest was history.

Over the last 16 months we grew pretty close and became a DJ'ing duo. There were quite a few times we'd be up until 6-7am playing records at my place until the mix totally degenerated into a massive trainwreck and Dan (aka DJ Bunky, or moon) would then abruptly fade the mixer out and proclaim he was done for the night. We also had an odd habit of snacking on massive quantities of things while DJ'ing. On one of the nights, him and I went through what must have been a half a pound of jellybeans while DJ'ing...and on another night we went through a 2lb bag of carrots.

Since we shared a love for similar music, I'd also constantly try and drag him out to see various DJ's he'd like. Due to aches and pains he wouldn't come out as often as we'd all like, but he still made a good showing. The pics are from the very last time Dan came out with me....it was Friday, October 27th, 2006 at Avalon in Hollywood. I'm dressed as a cheezy tourist, and dan is in his usual halloween costume.....he's a dan.

Dan's infamous "hand dance"

Liz (my gf), Dan, and I. This photo now sits permanently at the DJ setup we used so he can oversee my mixing and make fun of me when I play "White Horse" for the 15th time.

Dan's great personality, musical tastes, and sense of humor all had a great influence on my life and he'll be with me as long as I'm still breathing. He was a great friend. RIP DJ Bunky.

PS. For anybody that would like a copy of a mix or two of his, I can be contacted at jmayfield _at_ gmail.com

Here's Dan with his Mt. Dew and what's he eating- is that Life cereal? He looks just thrilled anyway!

Dan at Brian and Jenny's wedding

4 of my "best men". Dan, Brian, Todd, Leigh, Adam
Dan with salad tongs.
For this photo we were pretending to "run" and moved in slow motion. Dan looks like he's in full sprint - cracks me up.
Dan and my mom goofing off for the camera. I told him that my mom thought he was "the funniest guy on the planet".

More Halloween Photos

Halloween 2005 at High Impact Games

Dan and the other artists show off their impressive pumpkin-carving handiwork.

Dan tries on Roberto's creepy goth wig.

Halloween 2006

Dan with Jason Fourier and Jon Mayfield at the Avalon dance club in Hollywood.

Having Dan along at the club always made the night more fun. He'd often tag-team the turntables with Jon at Jon's apartment to help get us in a dancing mood before going out.

Repost of Brian Allgeier's Message

With the flood of posts to this site since John Wu initiated it, Brian Allgeier's original message has become buried in the depths of blog archives and hard to find. Most people I have talked to recently were missing or overlooking it. I felt it pertinent to revive it.

Don't forget to check out the "Older Posts" link at the bottom of this page or the monthly archive link to the right. - Dan's Bro

Brian's Original Post:

Hey everyone,

Most if not all of you have heard that Dan Johnson passed away at his home in Agoura Hills last week. How he died is still unclear. Over the years, he had severe back problems and was taking strong medications. Recently he was taking a new medication that resulted in some bad side effects. It is believed that he might have taken a fatal mixture of meds. As I get more information, I’ll be sure to let people know.

I have been in contact with Dan’s parents and High Impact Games to help coordinate arrangements for a wake/memorial gathering in Los Angeles. Many of you have asked where to send flowers or donations:

Flowers for the Iowa memorial service can be sent here: First United Methodist Church, 1298 7th Ave., Marion, Iowa, 52302 (at 11:00am Monday)

Flowers for Dan’s parents can be sent here: Lee and Chloe Johnson, 3750 Indian Creek Way, Marion, Iowa 52302.

When Dan was a child, he had a series of major leg surgeries and at one point was in the hospital for over a year. Without the surgeries, he would never have been able to walk. A few weeks ago, Dan contacted me about being a signing witness for getting his medical records from the hospital. Dan mentioned how he wanted to put together a book on his experiences and how he wanted to help and inspire children who are now dealing with similar challenges. Dan spoke fondly of the kindness and care he received at the Shriner’s hospital in Minnesota.

Donations/Memorials for Daniel Johnson can be made to The Shriners Hospital For Crippled Children, 2025 River Road, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55414.

Please use this site to post any photos, drawings, letters, or anything that you would like to share.

Dan has touched the hearts of many people during his time in Los Angeles. He was a very close friend and I will miss him greatly. Please send the link to the site to others who were close to him.

Casual Shot - Posted by Dan's Bro

Here's a typically casual shot of Dan.

Here's a pic of Dan and I at Kath's and my wedding.

Dan Shivering in His Pants - Post by Dan's Bro

Dan giving his speech at Kath's and my wedding reception. He was a natural. He was terrified of giving the best-man speech, but came out of it with close to a standing ovation. We all thought he did an excellent job.

Dan's Siblings - Posted by Dan's Bro

Here's another pic of the 3 siblings. Dan, Deb, and Dave. Dan looking stern again. He kinda has that old-Abe look. He just needs the top-hat. "Four score and 2 1/2 years ago, I once attended my brother's wedding as the Best Man...".

Apprehensive? - Posted by Dan's Bro

Here's a pic of Dan with one of his many fans. He swore it was real. He said he about peed his pants at the sight of her and then made the comment, "Mi gato besa mejor" (My cat kisses better).
As long as his cats can't read, they have nothing to be jealous about. Shhhhhh! I'll never tell. What happens with Big Bertha stays with Big Bertha.

Dan & Chooch ... "star struck"

Dan's Early Work

Pen and ink color done for Chloe's birthday present when Dan was 21.
Bird in pen and ink also done when he was 14.
One of Dan's early pen and ink drawings done when he was 14. We went out to see some otters released in one of the local rivers and one ran right accross Dan's feet. Guess it impressed him so he came home and did a drawing of one.

Dan playing golf and other rarities--from Chad

Here's Dan playing golf at an Insomniac event in 2001.

Here's Dan being Cheeky at a party in 2002. I believe that we met Gary Coleman shortly after this photo was taken.

Here's Dan drawing a cat on a tablecloth. This drawing had an indescribably loopy quality that still cracks me up.

Insomniac Christmas party 2001?

High Impact Games

This was taken at the company's Halloween party last year.

Dantastic images!

1. Oliver's rendered caricature

2. Brian's caricature (I must have doodled this on a 100 restaurant napkins. Dan always thought it was odd that I drew him with "squinty eyes".)

3. The Dan skin used for the upcoming "Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters" PSP game:

Dan and helicopter

Danny built his first helicopter in 1992 when this picture was taken. He never flew it and sold it when he headed out to California

Dan at Shriners hospital

This is Dan while in the Shriners hospital where they were working on straightening his legs. He was given a wrench to turn a nut on one of the bolts 1 turn 4 times a day. He had his own personalized erector set.

Insomniac Cruise (Ensenada, Mexico)
It was freezing on the top deck. We were on the track just above the Gym. Those were the days when it was all about work and friends. Now it seems like it's only about "work".

Insomniac 2004 X'mas Casino Party

T'was a short night, but sweet nonetheless.

Painting of Dan

Okay, I know I made his neck too thick. This was done way back while we were on I8. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have survived Maya. Thanks Dan. Also, thanks for all them smokes and philosophical chats about the important issues and about nonesense.
